Blog Post 3: Research Gap
The research gap identified in my literature review is multifold rather than singular. My topic of research is how to use psychographic analytics to develop reader personae representative of a genre audience by using generative AI platforms like ChatGPT.
Currently, the bulk of the PTW research I have reviewed shows multiple gaps. First, there is a surprising (sort of) lack of discussion defining genre fiction; initial research suggests that PTW researchers haven't really considered fiction writing professional enough. Second, almost every piece of literature I looked at for psychographics talks about using market segmentation studies as a way to sell a product AFTER it has been developed; there really aren't many articles that I came across that suggested psychographics could be developed as a pre-writing tool to heighten the successful design of fiction plots, themes, and characters to appeal to a target audience. Likewise, nearly everything I looked at for personae was also marketing based, focused on developing personae from what we know about wants/desires to develop a marketing strategy; instead, I am focusing on employing the development of psychographic-based personae as a pre-writing development tool.
Finally, the big ticket item is how to use generative AI platforms like ChatGPT to speed the process of data collection, the development and refinement of psychographic profiles to generate a more comprehensive reader persona against which plot, theme, and character concepts can be tested and refined to improve the quality of the outline and, eventually, the finished product and its marketing strategies.
Key gap items: pre-writing psychographics, reader personae, Creative Writing programs, writing to market, writing to audience, writing to genre, generative AI.
