What have you learned about the processes of designing a sound research study in class?

In many ways, the process of writing the research proposal was not too different from how I conceived my Master's thesis or how I approached writing proposals for Department of Labor-Employment and Training Administration grants. The key differences in the writing was that this was a method design specific to the PTW profession, which was a bit different than how Geographers approach a similar type of study...and yet, they were more alike than not. The structural approach was interesting, and having the lit review done first definitely allowed me to better conceptualize what it was I wanted to do for the usability study I proposed.

What have these processes taught you about your future roles as a technical and professional communicator?

As mentioned before, this is not too dissimilar from what I have done in the past. However, after several years being unemployed after leaving my last directorship, going through the process reminded me how exhausting a fast-paced and complex research process can be. This was a sharp reminder, and one that-while I appreciate having done the topic I chose-as told me that at this stage of my career I am less interested in pursuing this specific type of writing than I was a decade ago. Still, having the rust knocked off and a current retraining on the process won't hurt for the other directions I want to go.

  1. I definitely agree about having the lit review done first. I think that have that done made the writing process way easier and really helped me to have a better structure for my research proposal. I think it is interesting that this assignment was so similar to how you approached writing proposals in the past. I also agree that having a fast paced and complex research process can be exhausting.
